Edward may be identical with Edward son of Lewis and Mary Cockaine born 18 January 1685 who had brother John (26 April 1691) and sisters Ealse (22 October 1694), Elizabeth (3 March 1677) and Susanah (16 January 1696). This family was shown in Poddington Parish Records and this is near Wymington. Lewis was buried there on 13 December 1724 and Mary ("widow of Lewis Cockain a Labourer") on 17 August 1718.

Poddington and Wymington are parishes (with records since 1662) on the north-west edge of Bedfordshire bordering on Northamptonshire. Wimmington town itself is a few miles off the Bedford to Kettering Road.

================================================
Notes for possible ancestors from History of Bedfordshire 1066-1888 by Joyce Godber published by Bedfordshire County Council in 1969. Printed by White Crescent press Ltd. Luton, Bedfordshire.

Knights and Gentry (page 138)

Some knights were in the camp of Richard Grey, 3rd Earl of Kent, and possibly at Agincourt. Two M.P.s were sons of Grey mothers, Henry Cockayne of (Cockayne) Hatley, 1421, and Sir William Lucy, 1467 (the later's main interest was in Warwickshire).

Local Government (page 164)

The machinery of local government continued much as it had in the 14th cent. The sheriff still functioned. The office was still shared with Buckinghamshire, and one sheriff used for his official seal a design with buck's horns for that county, and a lantern - for going to bed - for this (Bedfordshire) (C.R.O. AD 2294 (1463). Bedfordshire holders of it included Thomas Pever (1406), Thomas Wauton (1428), John Wenlock (1444), John Rotherham (1476), Edmund Cockayne (1492), John St.John (1501), John Dyve (1510), William Gascoigne (1517). But the sheriff was losing ground. In 1461 he lost what vwas left of his criminal jurisdiction by an act which gave legal effect to what seems for some time to have been the practice (ch. 11); though indictments and presentments were made to him on his own "tourn" of the county, he no longer had authority to decide cases.

These were to go to the next sessions held by the justices of the peace. On 15th cent. commissions of the peace are names like those on the list of sheriffs; Thomas Pever, John Cockayne, John Rotherham and so on. This office (held for life, while the sheriff acted only for a year) was that in which local gentry got their main experience, though there were still many other offices to hold as in the previous centrury (ch. 11). In the troubled years of the Wars of the Roses they were caught up in baronial rivalries (ch. 12). More than one justice was of doubtful character: Hugh Haselden of Goldington was summoned before the Privy Council in 1427 for acts of violence (BHRS, xxix, 48); and John Lawrence of Wyboston was charged with cattle-lifting in 1454 (Op. cit., 56). Many had to take special oaths not to maintain breakers of the peace (Op. cit., 37, 39, 47, 59-60, 64, 75, 81). But, as under Henry VII and Henry VIII a strong monarchy emerged, the justices of the peace settled down as the main framework of county administration.

At the parish level things were less clear. The parish was scarcely as yet a civil institution. When in 1532-3 the government passed an act promoting the destruction of rooks and crows, responsibility for providing a net for this purpose was laid on the churchwardens. It was still the manor, or chief manor, that appointed constables. How far the constable was effective is another matter. In 1470 one at Wrestingworth seems to have been passive: a gang of ten men with swords and bows and arrows entered John Cockayne's premises and seized John Wareyn. Cockayne brought an action against them for intimidating four of his servants. There version was that John Waryn had stolen 2 silver shillings; and they only "placed their hands gently on the said servants and pushed them quietly to one side"; they then took Waryn to Wrestlingworth and deliverd him to the constable, John Bailey, for transfer to Bedford gaol. (Selden Soc., xivii, 158-60).

Cocking, Cockings:

(i) William Cocking' 1327 from the Subsidy Rolls for Sussex (Records Society 10, 56, 1910, 1956) from Cocking (Sussex).

(ii) William Coccing 1266 from M. Bateson's 'Records of the Borough of Leicester', 3 Index: Volumes, London 1895 to 1905.

Probably Old English Coccing 'son of Cocc'. See also Cockayne.

Cockayne:

William Cockein, Cocaine 1193 Pipe Rolls for Warwickhire: Record Commission, 3 Index: Volumes, London 1833-44; Pipe Rolls Society (translation in progress); "The Great Roll of the Pipe" for the twenty-sixth year of Henry the Third, edited by H. Hawisa de Cokaigne 1219 in the Assize Rolls (unpublished) for Yorkshire;

Geoffrey de Cokaygne 1228 in the 'Feet of Fines' for Essex (held in the Pipe Roll Society 17, 20, 23, 24, 1894 to 1900 of the Essex Arch. Society 4 Index: Volumes 1899 to 1964);

John Cokkayn 1332 from the Subsidy Rolls for Cumberland (in J.P. Steel's Cumberland Lay Subsidy... 6th Edward III, Kendal 1912).

Middle English 'cokaygne', Old French 'coquaigne', the name of an imaginary country, the abode of luxury and idleness. Cocken from Lancashire, is pronounced Cockin, is said to have been named in jest as the land there was cleared by the monks of Furness Abbey.

The surname was probably given to one whose habits and manner of life suggested he had come from the fabulous land of Cockaigne. It has also become Cockin and Cocking.
