My name is Kerry Ann Shooks I am the GGG Grandaughter of Mary Ann Dowling. I have read the report you have on the internet of our family. I would like to ask you some questions if you do not mind firstly who where Mary Ann Dowling's parents is it Martin Born 1790 something married to Anastasia Bulger Born1798 Ireland?

I am sort of lost with it all, as there are so many Dowlings out here are they all related? It seems they all left Ireland was it with the potato famine? And Bulger is it an Irish name?. Mary Ann Married John Caffrey Gulgong NSW. I have a site on Ancestry.com in the Name of "Shooks,Enright-Drysdale", the site is as it is, yes I have made mistakes in it but it seems if I try correcting them then I delete a whole group of people. I would very much appreciate any help you could give me, I am so lost, with the Dowling line. I have a Great Uncle Vernon Drysdale(Enright) who is 100years old and I would love to get this all down pat for him to know the story. Just finished all the research on why our name has been changed from Enright to Drysdale. Now know why it was changed but still trying to find out if we are also part of the Drysdale clan as we also have all same family stories. Do hope to hear from you. I live in Canberra Australia. This name, with variant spellings Boulger, Boulsher, Bolgar, Bolger and Bulger, derives from the Old French "boulge", meaning a leather bag or wallet, plus the agent suffix "-ier" (one who does or works with something), and was originally given as an occupational name to a leather worker. Job-descriptive surnames originally denoted the actual occupation of the namebearer, and later became hereditary. The surname from this source is first recorded at the beginning of the 14th Century (see below). Recordings from London Church Registers include: the christening of William Bolger, an infant, on April 22nd 1593, at St. Mary Somerset, and the christening of William, son of James and Susan Boulger, on June 21st 1621, at St. James', Garlickhithe.

In Ireland, the name is an Anglicised form of the Gaelic "O' Bolguidhir", meaning "descendant of the heavily-built swarthy one". The name belonged to south-east Leinster and several of the family were physicians. One Thomas Boulger, aged 24 yrs., a famine emigrant, sailed from Dublin aboard the "Victory" bound for New York in May 1847.

The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of John Bulgere, which was dated 1300, in G. Fransson's, "Middle English Surnames of Occupation", Worcestershire, during the reign of King Edward 1, known as "The Hammer of the Scots", 1272 - 1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

I have found most of my Dowlings in Australia but need help with Ireland. Are there any Free sites to search there??

Edward Dowling b.1833 Ire came out 1858 "Escort" with wife Anastasia nee Walsh and daughter Mary A. b.1857

Edwards mum Anastatia Dowling b.1798 (nee Bulger) came out 1862 with daughter Johanna b.1835 (Husband Martin Dowling and 3 other siblings did not follow!!??)
So in line from Edward, Mary A b.1857, Martin b.1858, Hannah b.1860, Catherine b,1862, Thomas b.1863, Edward b.1865, Anastasia b.1867, Elenia b.1869, James b.1871.Annie b.1873 John William b.1875.
The girls married Caffrey, Burns, Falconer,Hilyard.
Martin Married Ada Jourdant They had Carl L (among others) Who Married Mildred M Press 1928.
