Dear Brian,

I am most grateful for your taking the trouble to sent me the list of Civil Registrations for Doolan in Co. Meath.

My connection is on the Marriages List, June quarter 1878 Bessy Doolan, etc. She was my great-grandmother.

The details for you records are:
Marriage solemnised in the Roman Catholic Chapel of Athboy, in the Registrar District of Athboy, in the Union of Trim, in the County of Meath.

4th of March 1878. Patrick McGuinness, of full age, Bachelor, Rank of Farmer, residence of Chamberlainstown, father James McGuinness (Deceased) Rank of Farmer; married Bessy Doolan, of full age, Spinster, Rank of Farmer's Daughter, residence Grenanstown, father James Doolan, rank of Farmer. Witnesses John Dowly and Oner Martin.

The marriage was not registered until the 22nd of June 1878, hence its being in the June quarter.

They went to live in Chamberlainstown, which is a Townland south of Kells, west of the R164, Kells to Athboy road. Grannanstown is about two miles west of Athboy.

Bessy is short for Elizabeth which is given on the 1901 (age 43) Census; and on my grandmother's birth certificate. On the 1911 Census her age is given as 53.

I have not, as yet, been able to look any Parish Registers to try and find a Baptism record.

I hope that you will find this information helpful, and thank you again for getting in touch.

Yours sincerely, Kevin J F Noonan.

Following the expedition to what the Russians call the Northern Sea Route, these medals were privately issued in silver and copper. The Northern Sea Route runs from the Kara Sea to the Pacific Ocean, along the Russian Arctic coast - this being the majority of the North-East Passage. The SS Baymingo was part of a larger attempt aimed at supplying anti-communist forces in Archangelsk and Siberia, using a window of opportunity when the Kara Sea would be free of ice in the summer of 1919. J A Mikkelborg was in command of the expedition, and Captain R Dowling was appointed the Baymingo ’s navigating officer. With a cargo of mainly textile goods and chemical stores, the Baymingo was chartered by the UK’s Merchant Trading Company (a subsidiary of the Hudson’s Bay Company), in conjunction with the Cooperative Union of Russia and Central Russia. The SS Baymingo left Liverpool on 1 August 1919, her destination being the mouth of the River Ob, where she met up with a fleet of large barges. Under the command of Colonel Kotelnikov, these had been towed some 1500 miles by tugboats, all the way from Tomsk and Krasnoyarsk. The cargoes were exchanged, and the Baymingo returned to London, arriving on 19 October.

The 3 villages of Shere, Gomshall and Abinger Hammer in the Tillingbourne Valley are some of the most picturesque in Surrey. Several descendents of some of these Dowlings still live in the area. Rose Villa is still there, where George and Maggie managed the water cress beds.I remember as a child having so much fun there!

Hi there
What a fascinating site.
My Great Grandparents were Henry DOWLING and Avis SADLER. The family always said they came from Ireland to Surrey, where my grandmother ALice DOWLING was born. However we found they married in Wokingham and we have now got back to James DOUGHLING who married Alice JEROME in CHisledon,
WIlts in 1741. It will be difficult to find a link with Ireland now I think. James is possibly the sone of Thomas DOLE and Mary MITTEN, but I am now convinced about this!
You can see all our findings at my sister's website

Hello Brian,
We discovered henry's birth in the Wokingham Parish registers. We knew their first baby, Avis Dowling, died so I sent for the certifcate and was surprised to learn that it was in Wokingham. This sent us searching the Wokingham PR's and we found Henry's father David born there in 1795. A fellow researcher gave me information which led me to Binfield where I found David with his parents Henry and Mary.

James DOUGHLING and ALice JEROME married in Chisledon. I got this from the IGI and then checked the Parish reg's.They had no children in Wilts but these showed up on the Berks IGI for Uffinton.

To go further back than James is a problem. In the IGI there is a James born to a Thomas in Westwood. IF (and its a big IF) this is correct then its likely to be the marriage recorded as Thomas DOLE and Mary MITTEN in 1707 in Westwood with Ilford, WIlts. They had 6 children.

Hope you find it interesting - no link with your family though! Marion.

The family
always said they came from Ireland to Surrey, where my grandmother ALice
DOWLING was born. However we found they married in Wokingham and we have
now got back to James DOUGHLING who married Alice JEROME in CHisledon,
WIlts in 1741. It will be difficult to find a link with Ireland now I
think. James is possibly the sone of Thomas DOLE and Mary MITTEN, but I
am now convinced about this!
You can see all our findings at my sister's website

By the way, I live in Watford!

Marion.
