It is also thought that he worked as a station agent on the railway in Northern Ireland before he came to Canada. Does any of this ring a bell with any of your family history I have been unable to find out anything about his marriage. I believe he was married in Ireland. Thanks for any information you can give me. - Chris
2: Hi Brian: Thanks for your reply. The information I have is very sketchy as the only uncle Brian has left does not remember very much of his grandfather. The information i have is that the Brian who left Ireland was born in County Cork and worked in Northern ireland for a railway company before coming to Canada. Floyd says that he was Station Agent at an important junction between belfast ans Londonderry. Floyd also says during the war he visited some relatives near Enniskillen at a farm called Florencecourt but thinks these relatives were on his grandmother's side. Unfortunately he doesn't know her name. Brian's grandfather Thomas was the first of this Dowling family born in
Canada and he was born June 18, 1872. The children Thomas had were named, John Arthur, Frederick Lawrence, Floyd Douglas and Gladyne Mary May. I think they were Protestant which would be unusual for Southern Ireland wouldn't it? Hope you can make some sense of this I wish i had more time to spend on this as I want to visit Ireland someday and see where both our roots are. - Chris

Air Crash - The Clues in the Wreckage by Fred Jones - A Canadian Interlude - Page 104:
"US Army officers were at Downsview Airport, Toronto, Ontario, in February 1956, undergoing a course of training and conversion on to the UIA, or Otter aeroplane. The US Army were purchasing some of these aeroplanes, and pilots were sent to Downsview, the manufacturer's base, to convert and then ferry the machines on their delivery flights to the United STates. The manufacturer was De Havilland of Canada, a famous name and a company famed for its aeroplanes like the Beaver and the Otter, capable of flying into and out of very confined areas and ideal for bush flying in Canada.
On 14 February 1956 three Otters (aircraft) had been allocated for the course, and the flights that day were intended as orientation or familiarization flights. Bill Ferderber, a De Havilland test pilot, was the instructor flying Otter 553252. With him were Major Aaron Atkission, Captain Louis Durand and Captain James Dowling. Flying the Otter was nothing new to Ferderber, who, out of a total of 5,610 flying hours, had piloted the Otter for 480 hours. Major Atkission had totalled eleven hours on Otters, Durand had yet to handle it, and Dowling was to make his first flight in an Otter aeroplane
Otter 252 took off from Runway 15 at Downsview at 15:21 hours , and at 15:45 hours Air Traffic Control at Downsview received a telephone call that an aeroplane had crashed near Keele Street. All Otters were immediately called by the Tower but nothing was heard of 252. At 16:12 hours, a message from the scene of the accident confirmed it was 252 that had crashed. All the occupants were dead. The flight time for the Otter 252 that afternoon had been just seventeen minutes.
Because Otter 252 belonged to the United States, with Army personnel involved, the Americans sent a full Accident Board of Inquiry, including a fair quota of colonels, to Toronto, to carry out an investigation. Technical assistance was provided by the manufacturer. In the course of time, the Board reported that the aeroplane had broken up in the air, and this occurred because the Otter had flown through the wake of a jet aeroplane seen in the area at the time of the accident.
Two months after the accident to Otter 553252, on 10 April 1956, another Otter, this time belonging to the Royal Canadian Air Force and numbered VC-366, was cleared for an authorized flight from Goose Bay, Labrador. A few days earlier, the port inner trailing edge flap had been damaged and a new flap had been installed. The flight on 10 April was an air test for the new installation." This plane also crashed.
Air Accident investigation reconstruction at Downsview identified similarities in the nature of the wreckage between the two Otters. The book's author was called in to assist in the new investigation and called for wreckage distribution maps. The team examined much technical data and comparisons with 'good' Otters. The cause was attributed to structural system failures for a ratchet resulting from unexpected flap retractions which led suddenly to the tail plane being out-of-trim. This was the very feature that allowed the aircraft to maneuver in restricted spaces. The reconstruction triggered the development of a system filter which prevented the future failure. Captain James Dowling's death on board lead to improvements in safety.

Obituary:- Richard L. Dowling, 61, lifelong resident of Manhattan entered eternal rest on, Monday, December 7th, 2015.
Richard was born on October 3, 1954, to the late Mary Elizabeth (Lancaster) Dowling and James P. Dowling in Manhattan, Kansas.
Richard attended Lee Elementary School and was a graduate of Manhattan High School. While at Manhattan High he met the love of his life, Debbie, they were married on November 21, 1972 in Council Grove, Kansas. She preceded him in death on November 23, 2013.
Richard was a humble, gracious and caring man who was a source of great strength to his family, friends and anyone he encountered. He made himself available to listen to all and offer well thought advice. Putting others before him was how he carried out each and every day of his life. Richard's smile and laugh was a ray of sunshine that illuminated the kindness in his heart. Richard's life and legacy has left a mark in many lives that will forever be cherished and missed.
Richard was employed at Griffith Lumber to which he devoted his life to. He was a wealth of knowledge in the building industry with an abundance of customers to which he considered friends whom will all miss him deeply. There is not a day that passed he was not available to help anyone accomplish the dream of remodeling or building a new home.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife; Debbi, a brother; Curtis, and one grandson, Tyler Dowling-Burnett. In memory of our parents we ask that you take a moment to hug your spouse, children, grandchildren, and friends or take a walk in the clear crisp air to reflect your love for those you find dear to you as time waits for no one.
Survivors include son, Brian (Christy), a daughter, Angie M. Dowlling-Burnett, (Tracy), both of Manhattan; a son, Travis (Cherylynn), of Baldwin City. Seven grandchildren; Austin, Mary, Taylor, Brianna, Tanner, Isabella (Izzy), and Adalynn (Addi); One soon to be granddaughter, Anne-Mae; one great grandson, Kadin. A sister, Patricia Parr (Hal) of Topeka; a brother Gregg Dowling, of British Columbia, Canada, as well as a niece and numerous nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 11th, at 10:30 at the First Presbyterian Church, 801 Leavenworth, Manhattan, Kansas, with Pastor Patrick McLaughlin officiating.
Cremation has taken place. Inurnment will be held at a later date at the St. Patrick's Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home & Cremation, 1317 W. Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas, 66502.

I sent you an E-mail a week ago but I do not know if you received such.I have had a few techinical problems with my computor. There were a nomber of E-mails that were left in my outbox.I received an E-mail from you sometime ago,in relation to a query about my late Grandfather Joseph George Dowling, born circa1892 in the city of Liverpool England,The late Joseph George being the son of Irish Immigrant Masterbootmakers,Joseph himself apprently was the product of a very hard upbringing as were so often the case in the nineteenth century and runaway to sea onboard a old Sailingship at the tender age of twelve,Joseph I were told by my late father his eldest son David Ruebeeen Dowling, jumped ship as an illlegal immigrant in Perth Western Australia, from where he was chased by West Australian Police across the Nullabour Plain,to the east coast where he finally setteled in the Capital City of Queensland Brisbane, where he lived out his life.
Joseph Married a Ruby Johnston the daughter of a Cobb&Co Coachdriver just before World War 1 ,to my knowledge he was one of the original Anzacs who landed at Gappoli in 1915 where he fought the Turks,I beleive he was also a member of the Australian Lighthorse Brigade later on in the first world war.
After the war he settled down to various jobs around Brisbane, never great jobs but times were difficult with the great depression in the late twenties and early thirties,Joseph and his wife Ruby had five children three of whom lived to adulthood, my father being the eldest David Rueben, the second was Mervyn George, then a girl Oliveen Ruby,Aunt Olive is the only one still alive and is not able to remember much since an accident in 1989.Therefore I have nobody to turn to out here to ask questions about my late Grandfathers life. When you last E-mailed me Brian you mentioned you could look up information on the 1891census if I could find more imformation but I am afraid this is difficult as I am the eldest of the present generation of Dowlingd in this part of the world and have nobody to make enquires with,so unless you can come up with something I have come to a deadend, hoping you willfind something in your resources and reply to my E-mail I remain Yours Sincerly David George Dowling.
