Subject: Doolin!

Hey Brian,

Good of you to give Sherry the website for all the info about Wild Bill. I gather that she is all excited about where the picture of Bill came from. Hell, there have been all sorts of pictures of Bill dug up since he became a celebrity. I have a copy of the last one taken. He isn't wearing a shirt anymore and he sports about a dozen buckshot holes in his chest, but it's our Bill, allright!

My grandfather Robert N. Andrew was a deputy sheriff in Payne County,OK when the Ingalls fight took place. He was in the posse that Hale brought to the scene after the festivities were over. They chased around the county for a while, but the trail was too cold to follow, and they lost him.

Robert's wife, my grandmother, was Florence Doolin; she always claimed that they were no kin to Wild Bill. It was no thrill to be connected to an outlaw in those days. I always thought she was sweeping it under the rug, but I must say that there seems to be no connection, at least not in the Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma branch of the family. One present day researcher of some repute says that if there is a connection, it goes back to, maybe the early 1800s in Kentucky. I guess Grandmother was telling the truth...very much like her.

Don't let Sherry scare you. She seems to be a bit disjointed...her writing sometimes makes no sense to me, at all. I have quit answering her queries. Are you interested in the Doolin line? I might be able to help some, if you are.

Is Dowling Scottish?

Cheers,

Phil Andrew

Hi.
I found all your screen names on Cyndi's website for genealogy. I am too
researching the Dowling surname but not as much as the rest of my family line
because this Dowling married into my family line.
Here's what I have so far...

Elizabeth Dowling married d: Before 1883 because Thomas remarried...more
than likely Elizabeth died because after 1883 there is no other mention of
her.
Thomas Francis Luddy b; 1854 in Waterbury, CT d: 11/16/1916 in Waterbury,
CT married: 1877 probably in Waterbury have one child -
Catherine Luddy b: 4/4/1878 in Waterbury, CT

If you could compare to what you have found I'd really appreciate it...I
haven't gotten very far on this surname so whatever info would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks again.
Your possible distant cousin,
Adam Stango.

Brian sorry to be so slow in making a reply. My grandfather Michael Dowling was baptised 19/5/1850 - parents Thomas Dowling and Bridget Brennan, sponsors Pat Kealy and Mary Bourke according to the parish records off Gowran, Co.Kilkenny, residence Castlewarren. Thomas Dowling was the son of Lawrence Dowling, who Ws from Queens County. He married Mary Kealey. The Kealey family was from Kilkenny. Thomas Dowling had one sister, Catherine Dowling Carroll who lived near Carlow. We had relatives there in the early 1900's. But now they are all scattered. Many came to the U. S. but I have no information. They were the children of Kate Carroll's daughter who married a Haynes.
At any rate I am trying to find out something about Lawrence Dowling. I think he was dead by the time Thomas came to the U. S. which was about 1854. I would also like to know where Thomas and Bridget were married. I suspect it was in Carlow. I think she was from that area, and had a cousin that was the R.C Bishoop of Carlow. Unfortunately we have lost all contact with any of the relatives. The last time we heard from any Was before W.W.II. Any help would be appreciated. Merry Christmas Marcia Mabley

Merry Christmas Marcia Mabley.

Am descended from Lawrence Dowling - Queens County and Mary Kealey,
Castlewarren, County Kilkenny. Their son Thomas Dowling c.1800-1875
and wife Bridget Brennan lived in County Kilkenney-they emigrated to US
in 1854. My grandfather was Michael Joseph Dowling, lived in County Carlow
until 1868 then came to joiiin parents in Ironton, OH. Thomas Dowling had sister
Kate Carroll. Lawrence Dowling supposedly had one brother, James Dowling
who belonged to the "whitefeet"? and was hanged.

Subject: Diocese of Ossory: RC Parishes 1836

The following is from a book I have. It may be a bit difficult for you to
follow - but persevere :-) if you want to.

People are always looking for info onthis parish or that parish for all over Ireland. Various genealogical guides list records which still exist for this place or that place -. People look for records of Civil Parishes - it is said that Civil parishes equate to COI parishes - that's not absolutely so from what i read - but - another topic.

So - people are sent to various sites to check out RC parishes - *but* what they see on these sites are usually the parishes whcih exist for that diocese - today - not 150 years ago. Parish boundaries changed from time to time, some begin joined with others, some being divided into two as the population increased.....there are few maps for Catholic parishes and even if they were - they'd only be any use
for the year in which they were drawn up - not al the time cos of these changes.

I have made up excel tabkes for most the Catholic Dioceses in Ireland for 1836. I've also gone through a directory for c. 1930 - i can't remember the exact date....and made up another list of catholic parishes for then. There's a difference in that 100 years. I've not finished my 1930 tables yet....but for the momment here is the 1836 list.

This may be useful to some people even just to check the names of Parish Priests - there was a tendency for men to be sent to the parish from which they came after they left the seminary - if they didn't go abroad.

I run my columns like this:- Surname, Name (PP) Surname, Name (Curate);Parish; Closest Post Town.
Because they come from an excel table there are no commas or any dividers for each and as I am sending similar posts to all the county lists I am on - I just don't have time to try and run back thru them all to make sure you can see the separation of names and things. For that I apologise. Also, on these tables some placenames are abbreviated - this is the way they are in my book, spelling also are as in original.
